Background of Artificial Grass

In the late 1960s, a Chemstrand Company started manufacturing synthetic fibers to use as carpets. These synthetic fibers were considered a new way to increase the physical fitness of people living in cities. Later on, Ford foundation approached Chemstrand and they decided to work together for urban sport surfaces. They manufactured these carpets, initially known as ”Astroturf”; it has been used in making fields for sports since then.

Origin of Artificial Grass

Artificial grass was born in 1964 and it was known as “Chemgrass” back then. The Research wing of Chemstrand did a lot of research on Astroturf in order to check its strength, wear & tear, flammability, drainage and so on. With the passage of time, many sports complexes had started to install artificial grass in their sports fields as it had become easier to maintain as compared to natural grass.

In the 1970’s, more and more people started switching towards artificial grass. Due to increasing demand, manufacturing companies started experimenting with polypropylene to use as synthetic material for Artificial grass. Since then, polypropylene is considered a cheap yet affordable solution to use a nylon based synthetic grass.
